That's a good weight for shrugs, Jack... unless you're one of those who start a set of deads from the upright position. I always start from the floor. The first one is always hardest.
Something that I started doing several yrs. ago. I call them "power pulls" (part deadlift, and part shrug). Never see anyone else do these untill a few days after they watch ME do them! Created thease out of need as I just refuse to do a full dead at extreme weights! WAYYYY too much stress on one's lumbar spine and gives one a thick waist same as full heavy squats. Just not condusive imo for a "BB'ers appearance! Cutler, Coleman, Gunter even Art Atwood...all huge but all have that "blocky" apperance. I plan on lifting for a long while with this body of mine! With me...safety always comes first (as corny as that may sound) it's paid off tenfold w/gym longevity! I start this movement off with ascending sets of shrugs. 4 sets of 30, 20, 15 and 12 up to 315lbs, then move rite into the powerpulls of ascending sets of 5 to 6 reps up to 675-700lbs. Then break the bar down and do 2-3 sets of burn shrugs w/135-205lbs. Then I move on to delt training.
