What do you use as a gauge of a good workout?

I like pushing more weight, or getting a few more reps.....
I like the feeling of the pump.....
But the delayed muscle soreness is my sign.

Generally I use some or most of those examples you posted as my indicators of a good workout. Unless it's leg day and then I just out and out punish both myself and my training partner(s). I'm training with one young fella who pukes during every leg workout.

Not being able to walk up a flight of stairs after squats, or not being able to put a drink to my mouth w/o my bicep cramping after working arms, not being able to sit-up w/o my abs cramping after abdominal work...
These are the times when that little voice in the back of your mind is saying... "yeah mofo! That's right!"...It's when you feel a certain "pain", but this pain is one that causes you to smile and sometimes laugh strangely instead of grimacing (or laugh BECAUSE you can't help but to grimace)  Grin

I lke having to hesitate before going up or down a step after legs to be sure I don't wobble out and fall. Cramping bi's, cramping abs (I hate that part of resuming ab trainng after ignorng them for a while)

I hear you guys on the stair issue after legs.......We have our bathrooms up stairs and the flight of stairs is long and steep to get to 'em, so there are a great many times that I manage to somehow drag my ass up there after legs but when it's time to come back down I gotta stop at the top and take great care in how I approach the descent (I may as well be at the top of Everest at times like these!!).
