Chris Benoit’s Physician Goes to Trial Without Facing Steroid Distribution Charges

Phillippe Astin, M.D., the family physician who prescribed anabolic steroids to Chris Benoit in the year prior to the Benoit double murder-suicide, is going to trial on March 16, 2009. Many will be surprised to learn that in the final 175-count federal indictment, there is not a single charge related to anabolic steroids. Press coverage demonized Dr. Phil Astin as the doctor who prescribed steroids to Chris Benoit. If steroids were to blame for the Benoit tragedy, the evil doctor who gave them to Benoit must also be held responsible.

Federal prosecutors, who initially felt the prescribing of steroids was a “major issue” in the Astin case, decided against steroid distribution charges in the revised indictment. Perhaps they concluded, upon the advice of the Georgia Chief Medical Examiner, that there was insufficient evidence to support the illegal prescribing of steroids. Instead, Phil Astin faces charges of distributing and dispensing approximately one million dosage units of painkillers and stimulants classified as controlled substances, including Percocet, Oxycontin, Demerol, Lorcet, Ritalin, Vicodin, Xanax, Klonipin, Methadone, Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine and Soma “for other than a legitimate medical purpose and not in the usual course of professional practice. “

The media chose to demonize anabolic steroids while (purposefully) ignoring the fact that the Benoit household was the recipient of almost 15,000 dosage units** of Lorcet, Soma and Xanax prescribed by the dubious Dr. Astin over a 30 month period. This would supply an average of 15 pills per day.

The media’s main storyline, consistent with the contemporary steroid hysteria, revolved around the scientifically unsupported belief that anabolic steroids caused “roid rage” which ultimately resulted in the tragic Benoit murder-suicide. The media was quick to find statements that they could incorporate into this storyline.

In this case I feel CB's Doc was doing his job. The fault lies within CB's lack of communication with same as per which AAS and "other" recreational thingies mr. B may have been ingesting at this time...

BUT! At the same time I feel aS THOUGH cb BEING THE OVER THE TOP KIND OF FELLOW MAY JUST HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THAT EVER EVASIVE :"EDGE" buy trying all drugs available to him...Think about this for  MOMENT. And ask yourself...just how far will you go for that 15 minutes of fame...?

All in all the Benoit murder/suicide was more to do with the many head/brain trauma's he suffered with through his career and less to do with the drugs he was supplied with. IMO the Dr should be up on charges of malpractice due to him not suspending Chris from wrestling due to continued brain trauma through his antics in the ring than anything else and the WWE should also be held accountable as well, as I'm sure they would also have physicians on staff who "over looked" the inevitable signs of head/brain trauma that Chris was in all probability displaying.

If this were the NFL or NHL etc Chris would have been forcefully (if need be) retired from all the concussions he he took in the ring. Unfortunately the WWE does not protect their athlete's/performers and is only out for the $$$ that can be made on the backs of high profile performers.

Only Chris and his family really know "why" these things happened. I, in fact already knew that the so-callrd "steroids" were a non factor!
Common scense here...son has MS. NO company health insurance...mortgage on huge home...several car notes
Bottom line...Chris took the cowards way out of life! His family now has to  his bills w/shame.

...Probably has a huge life ins. package...although "suiside" makes the policy "null and void". RIP Chris! Best wishes to the family!

With some policies, they'll pay on a suicide after 2 years..
It is a drag that some people will sift through a tow sack full of bullshit in some poor bastard's sorry excuse for a life and blame it all on steroids.

But isn't this the way of mainstream media?!? I mean really why would anyone read a paper or watch the news if there wasn't a huge amount of sensationalized BS surrounding some sort of tragedy (like a murder/suicide), as this is what sells to the average non-thinking people. People want dirt and loads of it when some "big name star" fucks up, as it allows people to feel superior to these "stars" who made it (so to speak).

It also makes for great smoke and mirrors so that Mr/Ms Joe average is not paying attention to the real issues surrounding him/her like the economy, health care, real crime etc etc. Just another way to control the population 'cause really who gives a rats ass if CB killed his family or Paris Hilton goes to jail etc?!?

You are all too right p,s. It all boils down to an all too familiar example of nothing more than..."Americans are lazy -ass bastards w/too much time on their hands and want the government (welfare) TO GET THEM OUT OF EVERY LIFE SITUATION THAT COULD POSSIBLY HAPPEN!) The sad realization is they have NO reporations comming, they are owed NOTHING, and even though at the moment we have a "wind-up toy monkey" pretending to be one of our "presidents"/ national leaders...the comon elections for the senate in 2010 will save us all (in the States, that is...Canada, EU and S.A....can't help ya') as you all have already pretty much became complacement and your populous systems show this. Here in the States we do NOT stand for this for too long. Freedom is NOT just a word to throw around!
