New NPC Amateur Bikini Division Competition To Showcase At The 2009 Arnold Amateur

A new National Physique Committee (NPC) competitive division will be showcased at the 2009 Arnold Amateur Competitions. The 2009 NPC Amateur Bikini Championships will be held Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Franklin County Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Athletes in this division will be evaluated on the overall balance and shape of their physiques, physical appearance, complexion, skin tone, poise, and overall presentation.

Mike Davies, Co-Promoter of the Arnold Amateur competitions commented, This division is a welcome competitive opportunity for a wide range of amateur contestants. These are athletes who train to achieve a sleek yet less athletic physique. Their body fat tends to be a bit higher and their training focuses on intense aerobics and limited weight training. There are many athletes who wish to compete on stage without the intense training required for Figure and Fitness competitions.

IFBB Professional Fitness Competitor Julie Palmer added, The sanctioning of this new NPC division is an avenue to bring a new league of competitors to the NPC amateur ranks. Ultimately, it will increase the number of Figure and Fitness athletes who arise in time from the NPC Bikini division. Each competitor will be asked to walk on-stage alone and perform a Model Walk that will include a walk to the center stage, a front stance, rear stance, and full turn in front of the assembled NPC judges. Competitors will be judged wearing a two-piece swimsuit and heels.

Two divisions will compete as up to and including 54 and those over 54. Awards will be presented to the top ten in each division. The Overall Champion will receive a limited edition Arnold Fitness Weekend jacket and a one-year subscription to Posedown Magazine.

Don't get me wrong I think it's great to have a entry level type of contest, but a bikini division!!! Come on this is just a T&A show at best. I guess the figure gals are starting to look to much like mid 80s FBBs, and the judges want even less muscle on the gals, or they are just looking for yet another way to cash in.

If this takes off though it'll make BBing, fitness, figure shows drag out even longer, and those of us that actually have to diet and dehydrate for a show will really suffer.......Also will there soon be a pro bikini division?!?

Good gawd and I thought figure was tough to understand as far as judging goes....One can only wonder how fucked up bikini will be!?!?!?

I agree! Bodybuilding has been back-tracking for several years now and in alot of ways just simply headed in the WRONG direction! Hell, when the circus comes back into vogue, we can all compete there!...just as Sandow, Charles Atlas, etc...
Hummm...poseing to calliope music...? I can see it now...the "Barnum and Bailey/ Ben and Joe Weider extravaganza"...come one, come all!

By the time I did my last competitions, the fitness figure classes were making the total field of competitors overwhelming. Final preparation was damn nigh impossible, because we never found out until the athlete's meeting Sat. AM when our group would go out for prejudging. Master's/Grandmaster's men went out close to either first or last. You might need to be ready at 9 AM or 1:30 PM. Hard to be just right. If you are dialed in at 9, it's not easy to nibble carbs and suck a Gatorade ice cube or 2 for 4-5 hrs. You just won't be quite as sharp.

The competitors who didn't place in the prejudging don't even get to perform their night routine. Damn it, I paid my entry fee and did the work. I should get to do my night routine, even if only for my friends, family, and my own satisfaction. Ends very late, also. There won't be any food left at the banquet by the time the overall winners can get there. At the Cory Classic in '97, a tremendous spread was gone and the last of us to show up got delivery pizza. We didn't even have figure then, just lots of BB's and fitness folk.

But, the more contestants, the more entry fees, the more enthusiasts, friends, and family buy tickets. As long as the promoters are making more bucks, we'll have to deal with more competitors, whatever said promoters can dream up to draw crowds..
